First-Time Guests

We know when you first walk in to a place that is unfamiliar it can be an uncomfortable experience.  However, we believe when you visit First UMC, you get a sense of the welcoming spirit that is here.  We are a diverse family of faith who wants you to know that you have a place here with us.  First United Methodist Church of Slidell has been certified a "Welcoming Congregation" by the United Methodist Church.  Realizing the importance of creating a loving and inviting atmosphere especially for our visitors, we hope the following information will help you, "our guests", to feel at home with us.

PARKING: When you arrive, you will see that there is ample parking on all sides of the campus as well as a designated church parking lot across 4th Street from the playground.

HELPFUL INFORMATION: You will find a 'Welcome Cart' under the breezeway near the bell tower & foyer of the sanctuary (facing 3rd Street) with brochures about FUMC and United Methodist beliefs; copies of recent newsletters and a variety of other information, plus a small gift as a 'thank you' for being a guest with us.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND: Ushers, greeters, staff members and those who attend regularly are happy to answer your questions and help you to find your way around the church campus.  There is directional signage throughout the facility that will help show you the way to the place you are looking for.  You may print out a map of the campus by clicking here: 'Campus Map'.

CHILDREN/CHILDCARE:  You are welcome to bring your children to worship with you or you may bring them to our childcare/nursery area located in the Family Life Center.  You and your child will be warmly greeted by our staff of loving workers.  Your little one will be checked in and then you will be offered a beeper in the event that you are needed during the worship service.   If however you do bring your young child with you to worship services and need a place to console him/her during the service, you will find a 'Comfort Room' in the rear foyer of the sanctuary with rocking chairs, a changing table and a handicap accessible restroom.

YOUTH: Most 7th through 12th graders attend the 9:45ALIVE! worship service as a group, then join together from 11:00 until noon for a time of Bible study in the 'Crossroads Youth Room', #508, in the Family Life Center.

ADULT SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES: The hour our adults meet for study and learning begins at 9:40am.  Please check out each of the four classes offered and their respective locations on the 'Adult Sunday School' page.

RESTROOMS:  Restrooms are located throughout the campus.  Handicap accessible restrooms are located in both the foyer of the sanctuary as well as one for men and one for women in the Family Life Center.  Please see the 'Campus Map' for locations.

DRESS: Dress comfortably regardless of the worship service you will attend.  You will notice persons attending the 8:30 or 11:00 traditional worship service wearing everything from slacks & jeans to skirts & dresses; coats and ties to 'business casual'.  In the 9:45ALIVE! contemporary service you will see persons wearing casual slacks, blue jeans and modest length shorts.  At First UMC, it matters not how God's people are dressed...we are just thankful God's people are together!

TRADITIONAL WORSHIP 8:30 & 11:00
These services include traditional hymns of the church as well as contemporary praise choruses. In keeping with our Methodist tradition, the services include the standard liturgy of the church while speaking to the heart of today’s culture.    Musical presentations include a variety of choirs and ensembles, instrumentalists, and special guests.  Like all of the other services, our pastors present life-applicable preaching that speaks to the issues that we face today.  With the exception of Communion Sundays, during the 11:00 worship service, children are invited to come forward and join the pastors for a message prepared just for them.  Immediately following this message, children - preschool age through 1st grade - may attend 'Children's Church' led by an adult volunteer.  'Children's Church' is held in the Family Life Center.  Following 'Children's Church', the children are then escorted back to the sanctuary during the singing of the last hymn.

9:45ALIVE! CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP
This service features upbeat modern worship songs led by the "Refiners Fire" Praise Band.   This high energy service invites worshipers to clap and 'sing out' with the band!  Life-applicable preaching includes multi-media presentations and themes that seek to help the worshiper prepare to go out and face the challenges of the day.

THE TABLE WORSHIP SERVICE--Wednesday evening service begins at 6:30. Come  be a part of our mid-week communion  service.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion/Lord's Supper is served during all worship services the first Sunday of each month.  You don't have to be a member of this church or any church to receive Holy Communion.  The Lord's Table is open to all who seek relationship with Christ Jesus.  Out of sensitivity to children and those who may have issues with alcohol, we use the unfermented juice of the grape (grape juice) when celebrating the Lord's Supper.

NEVER are guests asked to lift their hands to be publicly acknowledged during any of our worship services.  We do however ask that visitors sign attendance registration pads (found in the pews) letting us know that we did indeed have 'new blessings' among us.

As the people ofThe United Methodist Church, we embrace “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors”.  In this spirit we offer to you and your family a safe place where you are nurtured and encouraged to grow in the Christian faith.  Whether you are awakening to faith for the first time, or have been ‘churched’ all your life, your  experience of God is of utmost importance to us.  If you have questions about what it means to live a Christian life, we invite you to contact one of our pastors.  If you have questions about the various ministries First UMC provides, we invite you to contact the staff person who oversees that particular ministry area.  Don't know who to contact or where to go for more information?  Contact our Director of Welcoming Ministries, Leslie Landeche -- she will be more than happy to help you! Meet the Staff.
